Questions & Answers

  • What style do you work in?
Looking at my sample portfolio here, you’ll see that my “signature style” is that of the individual homeowner, their goals, and their specific home. In the case of a remodel or addition, the style is complimentary to the existing home - I’ve never smashed a shipping container onto a Spanish Colonial Revival, nor would I ever. If the homeowner is ready for a total makeover, then, by asking questions and doing research, an entirely new structure can be realized with the style reflecting the tastes of the homeowner.
  • Who is your favorite architect?
In historical order: Andrea Palladio, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Paul Williams, and Zaha Hadid.
  • How much do you charge?
My total fees - from Feasibility Analysis through Design Development, Construction Documents and Submittal, Bidding and Contractor Selection, to Construction Observation and to Substantial Completion - have never exceeded 20% of the construction cost. There is an economy of scale, often my total fees are below 15% of the construction cost.
  • Can you just do me a design/make me some drawings?
Would you let a doctor do surgery on you without first understanding who you are, making observations, then forming a diagnosis? Rather than churning out designs in a hit-or-miss fashion, I conduct a Needs and Options Review/Feasibility Study to first ensure we both understand from where we’re starting, and where we are going.
  • I already have drawings, can you just get me a permit?
    No.
  • I’m ready to do extraordinary things! How do I get started?
Our Needs & Options Review/Feasibility Study will determine your Building Program, identify jurisdictional constraints & requirements, and clarify your destination. This is a paid professional service, and is yours to choose after our initial conversation.
